Dairy free dining

Dairy free restaurants, dish by dish

Dairy hides in more places than any other common allergen — butter, cream, ghee, whey, a last-second grating of parmesan. Mesava reads the ingredients each restaurant publishes and flags any dish that lists dairy, so you can see your real options instead of guessing.

Where dairy hides on a menu

  • Butter finishes on steaks, breads and vegetables
  • Cream in soups, sauces, curries and mashed potatoes
  • Ghee in Indian and South Asian cooking
  • Parmesan, pecorino or cotija dusted over a finished plate
  • Buttermilk in dressings, batters and fried chicken
  • Milk powder or whey in buns, batters and desserts

Any of these can turn a dish that looks dairy free into one that isn't. Because restaurants list ingredients themselves in Mesava, those components show up in the check rather than being invisible.

How the dairy check works

Add dairy to your profile — as a milk allergy or as a dairy-free diet — and every Mesava menu marks each dish No flags, May contain or Contains, with the ingredient that triggered it. May contain usually means shared equipment or an ingredient list the kitchen hasn't finished, which is exactly the thing worth asking about.

Read how the flags are built for the full detail.

Questions worth asking the kitchen

  • Is anything finished with butter before it leaves the pass?
  • Is the bread or bun made with milk or whey?
  • Can this dish be made without the cheese, or is it already mixed in?
  • Is there a dairy-free option for the sauce rather than just leaving it off?

Lactose intolerance vs a milk allergy

Mesava treats dairy the same way in both cases — it tells you when milk-based ingredients are listed. What you do with that differs: a small amount of butter may be a nuisance for lactose intolerance and a genuine risk with a milk allergy. Mesava isn't medical advice; follow the plan you and your clinician agreed on.
